Traditionally, (AKA as far back as the 90s!) West Coast IPAs were brewed using crystal (AKA caramel) malts. This made for a sweeter tasting, darker coloured beer. But, as the road changes, so do our preferences and the palates of the general public. Nowadays, the West Coast IPAs they're thirsting for are lighter in colour and more forward in fruity hops—so they made their own dreams come true with this beer!
